David Foster Wallace - The Problem with Irony (Will Schoder)

American culture and media have been stuck in a postmodernist context that celebrates and perpetuates irony and cynicism. While postmodernism grew out of skepticism and distrust of the grand narratives of the Enlightenment, it has helped form a society which fails to build anything of consequence - one that, for all intents and purposes, simply doesn't know what to do with itself. This video essay by YouTuber Will Schoder addresses this predicament through the use of footage from an interview with the late novelist and essayist David Foster Wallace, and uses modern examples to illuminate Wallace's insights. It is a perspective that considers the end of postmodernism, what may follow it, and what it all means for media, politics, and culture at large.
